Who am I?
I am Iain, a studio and on-location lifestyle photographer based in Edinburgh, specialising in contemporary male portraiture for children, teenagers, and young adults. My work can be defined as modern, playful, and at times unapologetically edgy—capturing individuality with style, confidence, and authenticity.
What is Zoomer all about?
Male portrait photography has evolved in a meaningful way over the past 10 years—celebrating authenticity and confidence. After over 20 years specialising in this genre, I’m now bringing that same approach to younger clients, helping pre-teens (tweens), teenagers, and young adults build confidence and express who they truly are.
The idea for creating Zoomer came from conversations close to home. Listening to my nephews and their friends talk about how they wanted to be seen by their peers, parents, and family was eye-opening.
They made it clear they didn’t want staged or outdated traditional studio portraits. Instead, they wanted images that felt real, modern, expressive, and relevant. Something that could be edgy, yet still safe, and ultimately true to who they are.
That insight became the foundation of Zoomer.
How is Zoomer different?
Like my adult male photoshoots, Zoomer is a bold, modern photography experience designed for young males (tweens, teens, and young adults). It celebrates personality over perfection, individuality over expectation, and, above all, authenticity
In a world shaped by social media and visual culture, young people are constantly influenced by the images that define confidence and identity. Zoomer meets this moment head-on—moving beyond outdated, staged portraits to deliver something raw, relevant, edgy yet safe, and unmistakably authentic and real.
At its core, it aims to break down inhibitions and self-doubt, helping young people feel confident, comfortable, and unapologetically themselves.
The Session - Natural and Candid
Every client is unique, so every photoshoot should be too. When booking a session, I take the time to learn about hobbies, interests, and personality so the experience can be tailored specifically to each individual.
I strongly believe in involving clients in the planning process. We’ll discuss the style of photographs they’d like, and I encourage sharing inspiration or examples they’ve collected. After all, there’s nothing more challenging than photographing a reluctant or disengaged child or teenager—so ensuring they feel heard and excited is key.
During the session, I use a relaxed approach with natural, unfussy posing. Some teenagers prefer not to smile, or to keep their smile subtle, and that’s completely respected. By allowing them to simply be themselves, they feel more comfortable—and that’s when the most genuine expressions come through.
Outfit changes are an important part of the session, helping to create a varied and engaging gallery of images. I encourage bringing a selection of favourite clothing, along with any meaningful props—whether that’s a musical instrument, skateboard, sporting gear, or even something playful like a lightsabre.
Above all, each session is designed to be an inclusive and supportive space, where every young person feels confident, comfortable, and empowered to express exactly who they are.
